Camera Will Not Power On

Pressing the power-on button causes nothing to happen.

Dead Battery

The battery may need to be charged in order to power on the camera. If the camera still won’t turn on after charging, the battery may be faulty and may need to be replaced as explained here.

Faulty Charger or USB Cord

If the battery will not charge, and there is no apparent issue with the camera itself, the charger provided may be broken or malfunctioning. The problem could also be a damaged USB cord. Replace the charger or the USB cord if there is an obvious issue with either pieces.

Water Damage

There may be water damage (including salt or other residue from dried water) in the device.

Inability to Take/Delete Photos

Photos cannot be saved or deleted in the memory/SD card.

Full Memory Card

First and foremost, check to see if the camera’s memory SD card has been filled. If that is the case, you can replace the loaded memory card with a new SD card, or transfer your photos and videos off the SD card to your laptop.

Locked Memory Card

If the memory card is not full and you are still unable to take or delete photos, check if the switch on the side of the memory card is engaged. If it is not and still not functioning, try to reformat the memory card. (Caution, it could erase the previous picture and videos). If the camera still is unable to save or delete photos, the memory card may be faulty.

Inability to Transfer Photos

Having issues transferring photos from my camera to my computer.

Incompatible with Computer

Make sure the USB and the USB cord is functioning properly. Connect the charger end into the camera, and the other end to the computer that you are transferring photos to. When connecting for the first time, allow the “Found New Hardware” icon appear and allow the camera to sync to the computer. Finally, in your “computer” folder, click the “removable disk” drive and access your photos from your PC.

Dysfunctional Computer

Issues may arise from individual computer to computer. Make sure all software is up to date, and there are no glaring issues presented in the computer's hardware. Computer should be fully functional for photo transfer.

Malfunctioning Computer Port

Make sure to check multiple ports to ensure that any unresponsiveness doesn’t lie with a faulty computer USB port.

Damaged USB Port or Cable

With a damaged USB port or cable, another option would be to remove the memory/SD card from the camera and insert it into the memory port of your computer. Access your files from “computer” and “removable disk” as before.

Jammed or Stuck Lens

Lens is unable to extend, retract, or stuck out-of-position; display shows the error message “System Error (Zoom).”

Zoom System is Not Receiving Power

Check and listen for the sound of the zoom motor running first, as you switch the camera between the playback to shooting mode. You should be able to hear the swirl and zoom noise created by the motor as the zoom tries to focus if it's operating normally. If it’s not running, then you may require a new zoom motor unit.

Sand/Grit is Stuck in Between Lenses

If any particles are preventing the extension of the lens, blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrel, as they may be harboring the grit that's jamming the lens, and push the particles out of the camera.

Instead of blowing out the grit, you could also create a precise vacuum with a thin wire insulation tube sealed airtight to the mouth of a vacuum tube. Then use this DIY vacuum tube to suction out all sand or dust rather than blow it around in the barrel. If there’s grit deeper within the ZS50, you might need to disassemble the camera further and completely replace the broken lens according to this guide.

Guide Pins Need to be Returned into Place

It's possible that the guidance pins that keep the lenses and lens barrel in place are offset and therefore are causing the jam and stuck lens. Place the camera flat on its back on a table, facing upward. Continuously hold down the shutter button, and simultaneously hold the power-on button too. This triggers the camera autofocusing as the lens tries to extend, letting the guide pins of the camera lens’ barrel move back to their intended spots.
