<A href='http://www.disclabel.com'>Disclabel</A> works great with my R300. I use it all the time just for that.
Between disclabel, and the CD insert printer in itunes, I'm a happy camper..
TO THE AUTHOR:
this doesn't have anything to do with the hint. i just wanted to ask if you could comment on the print quality on the cd/dvd? i'm buying the r200 this week but haven't really seen any print samples on discs. is it fast drying (comes out dry right after printing)? is it recommended to burn the cd first, or print on it first and then burn?
thanks a lot!
I personally find the quality of the R300 to be excellent. The Epson Print CD app is a little buggy though -- if you have no printers install and try to print (I did this once, accidentally) then it asks you to choose a printer from the Chooser first (Carbon App, anyone?) and as far as I can figure out, will not print until you reinstall the app.
Other than that the product works as advertised and I am VERY happy.
The Epson website suggests burning the disc before your print on it. It also suggests allowing the ink to dry for 24 hours.
I use Discus software from MagicMouse. It cannot be beat.

I have a R200 and the print quality is great. I will go so far as to say photo quality. It is not waterproof. I am going to get some spray on waterproof from an arts and craft store.
Anyone have a better suggestion?
I've been experimenting a little with coatings: I've tried Helmar's Crystal Kote Fixative spray and National Art Materials' Gloss Varnish. Both have worked ok. The Crystal Kote is more designed for artists to protect their drawings etc inbetween sessions, and you can draw or paint over the top of it, so therefore it isn't really waterproof. The Gloss Varnish has been a bit better in that regard, but you really have to do several light coats for it to work. It was tending to bead slightly if you don't spray very lightly, but then if do go very lightly, you have to do a lot of coats for it to become waterproof..pretty tedious when you have to leave it for 5-10 each time, for each disc!
Any other suggestions?
Well, a company called Diversified Systems Group, Inc. has what they call PhotoCoat media. It basically has the same ttype of coating that photo paper has, which renders the image waterproof. They aren't cheap though. Cost is around a dollar a disc when bough on a spindle of 100.

A4 paper size? Weird. I've had one of these for a few months at work, and the quality of the prints are incredible.. when you can get it to print. It seems so finicky with tray placement, when you can and can't place the tray into the printer for printing. Things of that nature. But once you get it just right and it actually prints, it works incredibly well.
We are using this printer at work in the interim before actually buying a proper cd printer, like the Bravo Primera II (the new version looks a little expensive for not a whole lot more, I think we'll stay with the older version). As such, the introduction of printing onto cds has really added a lot to work we give to clients, but sometimes because of the inconsistencies of not always working, I still have to hand-label things. But like I said, when it works, it works well. Not a bad investment at all for $99 or whatever it's selling for these days.
The Epson Print CD program is a convoluted mess. I create CD/DVD artwork in Adobe Illustrator using my custom template. Artwork is masked to fit automatically.
- Choose Page Setup, A4 and Manual Feed.
- Select Media Type: CD/DVD.
- Line up the white triangle on the tray and select Print.
Download the R200/R300 Illustrator template here.
Brian you are the man. I couldn't agree with you more Epson's Print CD program is an absolute joke, it's definitely the most lacking piece of software I have ever encountered. I downloaded your file and opened it with Illustrator 10 and it was almost perfect. Which brings me to my question. How did you set up this file. I'd like to slightly nudge the template up about 1mm. Also what's the process for printing on a CD that is printable all the way to the hole. Thanks again, you saved my sanity and this printer from going through my bedroom window.
Never mind, I figured it out. I just had to make an extremely minor adjustment. I can't thank you enough.
First, if you actually read the 1-sheet instruction sheet, that's EACTLY what it tells you to do so it's not exactly a hint, more like if you lose your instruction sheet, you can go to epson's website or call - BTW, I had to swap out a printer - their customer service is great! They responded by email and the 800 number sent me a new printer before I mailed back the old printer (pre-paid postage also) so Epson has been a great experience in all aspects.
The printer is FANTASTIC! They recommend that you encode the disc first versus printing it first since dust from the printer sleeve might scratch the disc beforehand, I encode first and then print - no problems after a couple hundred discs so I acnnot say if the other way works but why waste time printing out a possible coaster?
The controls are also great in the software - while it's PC like in many aspects (no un-delete), it does the trick 98% of the time - you can set the ring size - I have used discs with large hubs to the newer ones with printable hubs almost to the center - just type in the size. You import a picture, stretch and send to back. You can brighten/contrast every photo so if it's too distracting from the text or you want to make it brighter.
Create a text box and use any font in your system - for some odd reason it has trouble with blue text with a drop shadow - the drop shadow is weirdly misaligned but not with any other color. There are even some rudimentary text effects like stretching and warping.
I actually find that printing on SILVER printable discs is much classier looking than on WHITE discs - especially if your disc is not text heavy and you can really see the artwork. My only hint here is you probably want to set the +1 setting on ink spray (in the epson CD printer options within the apple printer setup). You can also set the alignment so your first few CD.DVD's might be off by a few mm's until you adjust it correctly - it's very, very slight so they're not wasted - just depends on if your 1,000% anal & fanatical :-)
Yes, the A4 setting is a little odd but since you have to drop down the CD/DVD latched drawer first, it's not like the printer might accidentally send a sheet of regular paper down (that's the bottom area).
The included clip art is 90% PC-laughable-bad but that's just another reason for us mac users to smirk. If you're like me, you'll be reading a magazine and see some image and think, that would make a cool DVD background :-)
Costco has the epson multipack together for $60 so if you're curious about expendables. Buying the colors individually is about $75 for the 6 cartridges.
I also got the color LCD screen and like it a lot - just put in your memory card, sroll through, pick the photo you want and press print (borderless 4 by 6 and up to borderless 11 by 8.5') - the only minor thing is the LED screen with other printer settings is rather dim so if you store it in a slightly dark area, it can be hard to read but that's a tiny complaint regarding great, great printer - especially if you're buying a new mac - it's only aboyt $49 after rebate!
Slightly off topic, but has anyone messed with the Bluetooth adapter for these printers?

I've tried printing from osX and Win xp and found that the printing is incredibly slow. It does have a nice blue light on the adapter, but unless there is some way to speed things up I would suggest that you skip this option.
Yea, the A4 is all in the instructions, which are complete and tell how to print. The worst part for me is getting the discs to load. Much of the time it misloads and gets spit back out, then you must remove the disc and carrier, close the drive door, and wait for the printer to reset, and then try it again. Sometimes it happens to me again and again, and sometimes it doesn't, but the loading of discs needs to be better and with change of error.

Load the tray again lining up the white triangle properly and push the printer's blinking button. Should clear the error and load properly.
When my R300 misloads all I do is wait for the error dialog to appear on the screen, re-align the arrows (BTW: I cut some white adhesive arrows to fit the indents), and press the Select button on the printer. This works everytime.
I have a problem with printing onto discs with my r200 printer, in that the cd/dvd option is greyed out in the bit where you select the media to print on.. in fact so are ink jet transparencies and colourlife photopaper! I'm sure its probably my fault and I did something hideously wrong as I am rather unfamiliar with macs, but printing on every other media works fine, its just that I can't select these options! does anyone have any idea what's wrong with it??
ta in advance
Sounds like you don't have the CD/DVD guide tray folded down. If you do I'd say the sensor that shows it down is not working?
it is down and the.. other thing with the cd on is inserted and it all looks ok except for the printing options being greyed out :
The pressing the paper load button tip was helpful, I'm printing multiple CDs for my band and it was cumbersome to go through the print command steps over and over. Now I can have it print multiple copies and use the load button on the printer between each one, I just have to be careful to pull the tray out between each CD and then align the arrows again because once it grabbed the tray wrong and ate the whole thing. I had to carefully push it back out through the slot in the back to pull it back out.
If CDs start to get dirty when printed, cleaning the rollers helps--Close the CD tray, put in some paper, and hit the load paper button a couple times just to feed blank paper through.
Also, I found a tip on another blog that helped me when installing--selecting the printer under USB for printers gives you an erroneous 'driver not installed' error, no matter how many times you install it--that stumped me for a while--you have to select the printer under 'Epson USB'.
I bought the R200 already. It works good. However, I lost the cd. Can anyone please send me the software that I can print on the cd! I desperately need it. I think it < 2 M

DRYING!!
I was having some problems with smudges on the dvds I was printing on my R320. My solution was to buy a can of clear coat spray paint and top the dvd with that. Unless you stare at the dvd under certain light you can't even tell that it was sprayed with anything. It took about 10 minutes to dry to the touch and about 15 till I stacked them (just to be sure). It has since been over 24 hours and they look great and dont stick together or anything.
When spraying them though, make sure you do it in a clean area so dirt, dust, hair, etc. dont dry into the disc.

EPSON Print CD bundled with this printer allows you to create CD/DVD labels. After you create the CD/DVD label data, you can print on 12-cm CD/DVD and 8-cm CD/DVD with this printer. Follow the steps described below for CD/DVD printing.
When printing on CD/DVD, keep the following points in mind:
Notice for CD/DVD printing
- Use only CD/DVD labelled as ink jet printable, for example 'Printable on the label surface' or 'Printable with ink jet printers'.
- For more details on handling CD/DVD and guidelines for writing data to a CD/DVD, refer to your CD/DVD documentation.
- A lower level of color saturation is used to ensure print quality when printing on a CD/DVD, as opposed to Epson special paper.
- Do not print on the CD/DVD before writing your data to it. If you do, fingerprints, dirt, or scratches on the surface may cause errors while writing data.
- Try to test printing on a spare CD/DVD.
- The printed surface is easily smeared immediately after printing.
- Be sure to let CDs and DVDs dry completely before using them or touching the printed surface.
- Do not let the printed CD/DVD dry in direct sunlight.
- Depending on the CD/DVD type, smearing may occur depending on the level of color saturation.
- If the printed surface is sticky even after it has dried, the color saturation level may be too high. In that case, lower the level of the color saturation in EPSON Print CD.
- Moisture on the printable surface may cause smearing.
- If you are going to print a large amount of CDs/DVDs, first print on a few spare CDs/DVDs and check the printed surface after one full day.
- If the CD/DVD tray or the internal transparent compartment are accidentally printed on, immediately wipe off the ink.
- Reprinting on the same CD/DVD may not improve the print quality.
- The printable area of a CD/DVD is illustrated as follows.

Cleaning the Printer before printing on a CD/DVD
Before printing on a CD/DVD, it is necessary to clean the roller inside of the printer by feeding and ejecting Letter size plain paper. This is to prevent any dirt on the rollers from adhering to the printable surface of the CD/DVD.
Clean the rollers only once before printing CDs/DVDs. You do not need to do this each time you print on a CD/DVD.
Make sure that the printer is on. |
Open the paper support, then slide out the extension. |
Open the output tray. |
Load letter size paper in the sheet feeder. |
Press the paper button. The paper is fed. |
Press the paper button again. The paper is ejected. |
Repeat steps 4 to 6 several times. |
Positioning the CD/DVD
After you have finished cleaning the printer, insert the CD/DVD into the printer as described below.

12-cm CD/DVD | 8-cm CD/DVD |
It is necessary to use the 8-cm adapter in conjunction with the CD/DVD tray when printing on a 8-cm CD/DVD. There are three tabs protruding from the perimeter of the 8-cm adapter; two round tabs diagonally opposite each other, and one small rectangular tab. The round tabs correspond to the semi-circular holes in the CD/DVD tray. Holding the 8-cm CD/DVD adapter so that the semi-circular tabs fit into the semi circular holes, insert the 8-cm adapter into the CD/DVD tray, as if it were a CD. The single rectangular tab should also fit neatly into the indentation at either the top or the bottom of the CD/DVD tray. To remove the adapter, gently push upwards on the round tabs.
