When you upgrade to macOS Catalina, you get more of everything you love about Mac. Experience dedicated apps for music, TV, and podcasts. Smart new features in the apps you use every day. And Sidecar, which lets you use iPad as a second Mac display. Best of all, upgrading is free and easy.

It's not that I don't have access to the compatible older version, I have multiple archived copies. The problem is the new incompatible version automatically installs over the old compatible version, despite not being able to run on this platform, requiring me to constantly go back and restore my archived copy. This happens at least once daily. Aug 01, 2019  The Catalina installer uses the list to identify installed but incompatible apps. A quick scan of the compatibility list reveals that many Mac antivirus apps currently don’t work with Catalina, but others are affected too.

Chances are, your Mac can run macOS Catalina.

When you upgrade macOS or migrate content to a new Mac, software known to be incompatible with the new macOS version is set aside and won’t run on your updated system. The software is moved to a folder named Incompatible Software, at the top level of your Mac startup disk.

If you want to use one of the incompatible apps, get an updated version that's compatible with your new OS. Apps in the Mac App Store list their compatibility and system requirements on their product pages. You can also check with the app developer to find out if they have a new, compatible version or plan to release one.
