Humans are a forgetful race. We keep forgetting where we left the keys, when our appointment is, what are we supposed to do, where we have to go, and so on and so forth. There is a reason why people need reminders and a reason why reminder apps are so popular.

Sep 13, 2016  Important: An iOS app linked on or after iOS 10.0 must include in its Info.plist file the usage description keys for the types of data it needs to access or it will crash. To access Reminders and Calendar data specifically, it must include NSRemindersUsageDescription and NSCalendarsUsageDescription, respectively. To access the user’s Calendar data, all sandboxed OS X.

We also forget important life-threatening stuff like taking those pills or wishing our significant another happy anniversary! The problem is so deep-rooted that Android devs have developed different kinds of reminder apps for different types of people.

Best Reminder Apps for Android

Here, I will share some of the best reminder apps so you can better stay on time and manage your important affairs in an organized fashion.

1. Pill Reminder – Medisafe

If you often ask yourself, did I took my pills today? This app will help you answer that question.

It comes with a host of features that will keep you healthy as a horse. How?

Enter the details of your pills like name, dose, days, time of the day, and whether you have to take it before/after lunch or dinner. Medisafe will then send you timely reminders every day. But that is not all what it does. It will create graphs and reports so you will know how many times you have missed your medication.

You can also track other health-related stats and measurements like weight, blood pressure, calories, mood, temperature, cholesterol, and more. With so many data at your fingertips, you will be able to make comparisons of weekly/monthly reports to understand the progress that you have made so far. How consistent you were and how your health has improved over time. Are those pills effective?

You can also enter doctor’s appointments so you remember when the next check-up is. A lot of people have to reschedule because either they missed it or failed to plan for it in advance.

You must remember that the app will only work if you input data accurately and consistently. If you forget to enter data or are doing it carelessly, Medisafe will fail to work as advertised. So, make a habit of using it. Thankfully, the app give you an option to set up a daily reminder.

The pro version, at $39.99, will offer more themes, 12 new voices for voice reminders, ability to add family members as separate profiles, and more health metrics. If you are serious and are on long-term meds, you should get Medisafe.

2. Renotify

It seems we humans are not that smart after all or we are getting too dependent on technology. This is what happens with me all the time. I receive a number of notifications during the day. A lot of times, I simply swipe right and forget about that notification landing me in a spot. Simply put, notifications are there to remind you but what happens when you forget the notifications!

Renotify will notify you, again. Duh. It sent persistent notification that sits in your notification bar and takes less than 30 seconds to set a reminder. You can use it even when your screen is locked. Just create a quick note and save it for later viewing. And when you are done, you can tap on the Discard button to delete the note/reminder.

Next, press the Fn (Function) key twice or click the Edit menu and select Start Dictation. Speak to your Mac and the words you speak will start appearing in the text field. If you’ve set up Enhanced Dictation, they’ll appear immediately. Oct 07, 2019  Type a new word or phrase as you want it to be entered when spoken. By default it’s only suitable for dictations of 30 seconds or less but you can turn-on Enhanced Dictation for unlimited transcriptions. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  System Preferences, click Keyboard, then click Dictation. Open the Dictation pane for me Click the pop-up menu below the microphone icon, then choose the microphone you want to use for keyboard dictation.

I use it the most in the morning. There are tons of notifications waiting for me by the time I wake up. So, I use Renotify to note important ones and get rid of the rest. The app was purpose-built. There are no sets of icons or additional settings. It is light-weight and focused on making and deleting notes in seconds. Saves a lot of time that we usually waste messing around understanding and setting up apps.

The pro version, at $1.99, will allow you to activate vibrations and expand notes. You can access the last 50 notes you had made. It also adds support for Android Wear which is really useful for notifications.

3. Memory Helper

This is what I recommended to my friend who has a kickass to-do app at his disposal and still manages to not check them off. You see, he created a list of to-dos but never opened the app. I am sure he is not the only one who is facing this issue. I often don’t use my Google Calendar app.

Memory Helper takes a different approach. You create a list of things you need to get done, like on any other app, but you don’t have to open it. The app will launch itself every time you unlock your droid forcing you to look at everything you have on your plate.

This way, you will never forget what you need to do and only open the app when you need to add more stuff. Pretty useful and reliable.

The app is free and ad-supported but there is $0.99 monthly subscription to remove ads. I never saw a dev take this approach but hey, to each his own.

4. Recurrence

Sometimes, you need to be reminded of something on a regular basis. Like drinking water every hour. Like going for a walk every day at a specific time. These are recurring reminders that you need periodically to do something.

Recurrence is a small little app that will help you with this. You can set recurring reminders for daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. It also allows you to choose any day/days of the week to set recurring reminders. Like you can be reminded to fast bi-weekly.

You can color code your reminders and set custom icons. There is the basic snooze function that we keep using and abusing. This is why it comes with a nagging mode where you can set ‘persistent reminders’. You cannot swipe these reminders away from your notification and it will nag you every few minutes. Maybe I deserve it!

The app is free to use but for $0.99, you get backup/restore, a widget, and future updates.

5. Appointfix

This is for people who are busy with corporate meetings and need something to manage their appointments while on the move. Appointfix will allow you to note appointments but you can do that with a regular diary too. So, whats so special about this app?

Appointfix will also help you automatically send reminder messages to people who are scheduled to join or are running late for the meeting.

I was surprised to see a new icon on my calling screen. I can now directly add an appointment right when I am talking to my editor. It offers a built-in calendar but I like Google Calendar more. The app will allow you to sync everything with the latter so that is cool.

Other features include notes, color coding, and ability to add recurring appointments. You know, those monthly meetings where your boss wants to know why you missed your targets?

The pro version, for $69.99/yr, will remove 45 meetings limit, remove branding, enable multi-device sync, enable group meetings, and offer 250 free messages.

6. Notisave

Another notification app with a difference. On your droid, you will find a clear all button at the bottom of your screen when you are checking notifications. Click on it and your plate is cleared. When you receive too many notifications, it often happens that you miss something and hit the clear all only to be left wondering what I missed?

Notisave is a clever app. It will save all your notifications inside the app so you don’t have to worry about forgetting or clearing notifications in the notification center. Just open the app and you can access all the notifications there.

Why this app matters? Because you can view past notifications too which is cool. This helps me stay sane and keep everything in check. What’s more? If you want to read messages but don’t want the sender to know (think double blue ticks), you can use this app to read the messages instead.

Notisave is one those apps that you will actually end up using more than you know.

7. Google Calendar

Google Calendar is an all-rounder. It can handle pretty much everything you throw at it. Google calendar not only handles events, but you can also add reminders to it.

The best part of Google calendar is how quick it’s, I just have to say, “Ok Google, remind me tomorrow at 8 AM to get some milk”. That’s it. I don’t have to look again,

You can create multiple calendars within the app and toggle them on-off based on what you want to view. I have one editorial calendar for TechWsier, one for my personal life like b’days and other events, and one for major tech events.

Tech events? Google Calendar can also pull data from a number of sources. I have added TechMeme events calendar to it so I know when the next Apple event is. Or you can import your friend’s birthday from Facebook to Google calendar, thus making it one of the best birthday reminder app for Android.

Same goes for reminders. You can quickly add reminders and check them off when you are done. Google Calendar also works with Google Assistant. I can just ask GA to remind me to make that call and it will be added to the default calendar automatically.

No matter what your needs, you can customize Google Calendar to your satisfaction.

Reminder Apps for Windows

With this thought in mind, I started looking for reminder apps and found some amazing ones. So, here are some of the best reminder apps for Windows for different types of users with different types of needs.

1. Cortana

Cortana is Microsoft’s answer to Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri. Although late to the scene, Cortana is already making waves. While you can use the virtual assistant for much complex tasks, you can also use it to set simple reminders.

Just launch Cortana on your Windows 10 PC or smartphones (no support for preview versions) and ask her: Remind me to call Dad on Friday 19:00 or remind me to pick up laundry in one hour.

If you are using Windows 10 PC, simply press the CTRL+C keys or use the microphone on your Windows smartphone. You can also set location-based reminders so Cortana will only remind you to pick laundry when you are in the vicinity.

You can set person-based reminders so the next time you are chatting with your boss, Cortana will remind you to send that file.

You can easily manage all your existing reminders and make changes as necessary. Cortana is free to use and is only available for Windows 10 users.

2. Pillbox – Medicine Reminder

You will find a medicine box in every home. Pills are now a part of our lives and a lot of people can’t live without their daily medication. This is not a major problem as long as you remember to take them on time. But we are a forgetful race, aren’t we?

Pillbox is a medicine reminder app for Windows that will help you remember the pop your pills on time. Enter the name and dosage of the pill along with time and days of the week you are supposed to take them. Now, Pillbox will notify you when your pills are due. Trust me, this can literally save your lives.

All the data will sync to your Microsoft OneDrive account. There is a calendar mode where you can see your frequency and all the days you missed your medication. Your doc, and your mom, won’t be happy about it.

3. RemindMe for Windows

RemindMe for Windows is a free app that was built from the ground up for the Windows 10 platform. The developer has focused on usability and functionality rather than bells and whistles. A simple and fast app that will allow you to set reminders in no time using the live tile shortcut. A boon for people who need to simply get things done and don’t want to bogged down by too many options.

When you set a relative timer, you will see a countdown timer ticking. You can also set absolute reminders (date and time). Keeping in line with the UI of Windows 10, it comes with a live tile format. You can sync these reminders with Windows 8 devices if you have any!

4. Desktop Reminder

Where RemindMe was a simple little app focused on doing one thing, Desktop Reminder comes laden with features. There are a lot of ways to customize the app like skins, tones, profiles, and alarms.

You can use Desktop Reminder to set up reminders for tasks as well as events. There is a built-in calendar where I was able to see all the tasks that were pending on a given date. What makes it useful though is it’s capacity to remind you, weeks or months in advance, about an important task based on the urgency level you had set.

For example, as a blogger, I can set an urgent reminder for a tech event next month or write that explainer next month before the product launch. This should give you plenty of time to prepare for the task. You can import iCalendar files too.

While the free version is good enough, there is a pro version as well, available for $29 that will add the ability to link to docs and files, group multiple tasks like errands, support for printing tasks, executable actions. The last one will allow you to open a particular doc at a given time.

5. Windows Shutdown Assistant

Never judge a software by its name! While the name suggests that it has something to do with shutting down your PC, which is true, it is much more than that. Windows Shutdown Assistant was developed by Apowersoft, a popular name in the app and software industry.

You can create reminders with alarms but at the same time, you can also create notes. Think of it as a cross between a reminder and notes app. You can open a particular file or document at a given time so you know when you need to finish that report.

Apart from this, you can use WSA for running and stopping Windows programs on a schedule. This means you can hibernate before going to bed, lock your PC during lunch time, or log off at the end of the day. It works with other programs too so the functionality is only limited by your imagination. There is support for hyperlinks, so you can open Sony website to watch Argentina play in FIFA.

Windows Shutdown Assistant is compatible with Windows 7, 8, and 10 and is completely free to download and use. Think of it as notes, reminders, and scheduler app.

6. 2Day

2Day is not just a to-do and reminder app but a complete personal organizer. It is available on both Windows computer and mobile phones. Taking a cue from the interface of some popular task management apps, 2Day will show a list of tasks and reminders for the present day followed by what is up for the week and month.

For example, I was able to create different lists of reminders and tasks like shopping, hobbies, work, home, and so on. If you are a fan of Tim Ferris then you will like this app and its approach. It supports Cortana which is cool. 2Day works with Windows 7, 8, and 10.

You can also add a task or a reminder with no dates which will be shown at the end of the list along with all the reminders that have been completed. 2Day not only syncs with Windows phones but also Office365, Outlook, and ToodleDoo but that will cost you a one-time update fee of $3.99 which is not bad.

7. Kana Reminder

When compared to 2Day which is a reminder and tasks management app, Kana Reminder is an easy to use app that will help you set simple reminders. Set a reminder and you will be notified when the task needs to be done.

Like Windows Shutdown Assistant, Kana Reminder also comes with a built-in scheduler that you can use to tell your computer when you hibernate, shutdown, and perform launch certain software programs. I set it to run Winamp so I could listen to the FIFA World Cup song which wasn’t great anyway.

As far as security is concerned, I was able to secure my reminders using passwords which is cool because I have a nasty habit of jotting down sensitive information on Sticky Notes! Kana Reminder has a simple UI with some hotkeys to take care reminders and alarms.

8. Remember the Milk

Let’s take a look at some advanced reminder apps that are cross-platform and offer more than just a way to add reminders for simple stuff. Remember the Milk, is a popular app that you can download and install on Windows, Android, iOS, Mac, and Linux platform. Not only this, there are also browser addons and extensions available.

You can add tasks on Windows that will sync with all your other devices. These tasks can be then further divided into sub-tasks. The latter feature is more suitable if you want to manage different projects and need to keep reminders for each task separate and project-wise.

I was able to add tags to each reminder which allowed me to search for them super quick. RTM integrates with several 3rd party apps like Twitter, Gmail, and Slack so you can receive notifications and timely reminders no matter what tool you are using. I quickly pulled some files from my Dropbox account to add to a reminder.

Remember the Milk is an advanced reminder and tasks app that is suitable for advanced users who are looking for management and organizing solution. While the free version is good enough, for $39.99/year, you will truly experience the full potential of the app.
